Gables, North Balgowlah

Front and rear gable extensions to a detached single storey family home in North Balgowlah, Sydney.

Description

The twin gables front and back transform a traditional weatherboard bungalow into a fun and playful young family home.

The gable to the rear creates a vaulted ceiling over the internal and external convivial spaces. Reused existing bi-fold doors and a triangular highlight window link the internal and external pitched roofs to create a large space for entertaining.

The dining and entertaining spaces connect directly to the kitchen which has been able to extend within the footprint of the home allowing for a large pantry, island bench and concealed laundry.

An existing skylight was reframed to draw light into the depth of the plan and direct it at the kitchen benchtop.

Large steel shrouds have punched large picture frame windows into the existing weatherboard walls capturing views of the new pool and planting.

The addition to the front has allowed for a large bedroom with vaulted ceilings, the creation of a large ensuite to the masterbed and a sense of arrival that was once missing.

The internal material and colour palette includes a blend of light colours and subdued tones with birch plywood and hardwood timbers. This is offset with the dark stained hardwood shiplap cladding to the new additions and the light neutral colour of the existing, contrasting old and new.

Kitchen joinery includes a subtle v-groove to the fronts to give interest and texture, where the small square mosaic and rippled rectangular tiles continue the soft colours and textures to the ensuite and bathroom.

The additions are completed with the remodelling of the existing bathroom, creation of a study, built-in robes throughout, new pool and landscaping.
