Juliette, Camperdown

Extension and renovations to a detached single storey brick federation dwelling in Camperdown, Sydney.

Description

Located in the Hopetoun-Roberts-Federation Streets Conservation Area, the project draws on the heritage features and qualities of this history rich pocket within Sydney’s inner west.

The addition to the rear is clearly separate to the original dwelling and provides more current amenity and accommodation including open plan living, kitchen and dining, which are connected to the sleeping spaces, garden and laneway with a two-storey void, face sliding doors and terraced landscaping.

The new first floor addition consists of an attic room, masterbed, ensuite, piccola terrazza and Juliette balcony.

These spaces take shape within a pitched roof form and capture views of the Golden Robinia and laneway through layers of screen and tree canopy.

Throughout the house, high end architectural finishes meet clean lines, modern geometries and traditional forms, creating a palette and language of playful sophistication.

The junction between old and new is defined through a series of level changes, material delineation and a light filled stairway.

A curved timber joinery wall further enhances the transition from old to new by opening up to the open plan living, kitchen and dining with a large framed view to the garden beyond.

The journey through the house is lifted by the opening to the garden and double height void within the living space.

The void and screen filter light into both the ground floor living and first floor masterbed, where the extruded gable form that wraps the screen directs views and creates privacy from the immediate neighbours.

This project was completed during my time at Adriano Pupilli Architects.

As the project lead, my involvement ranged from pre-design including the initial measure-up, concept design, overseeing the development application, construction documentation and administration of the contract while the project was under construction.
