Sawtooth, Drummoyne

Two-storey extension and internal renovations to a semi-detached brick federation dwelling in Drummoyne, Sydney.

Description

Located in the Bourketown Conservation Area, the project draws on the heritage qualities of the beautiful existing federation home and this history rich location within Canada Bay, Sydney.

The two-storey addition to the rear is clearly separated from the existing dwelling and provides increased accommodation including an open plan living, kitchen and dining to the ground floor, a study from the half-landing with bathroom below, and a masterbed, bathroom and attic room to the first floor.

The addition to the rear is characterised by the sawtooth roof form, which reflects the spaces within and allows highlight windows to draw morning sun into the masterbed, bathroom and stairwell / study.

The form is also offset from the northern party wall to allow for highlight windows to further draw in light throughout the day and vent rising hot air during the summer.

Large face-sliding timber doors open the kitchen to the deck and garden, bleeding the boundaries between inside and outside.

A retractable shade is guided by stainless steel tension wire to block out the afternoon summer sun and allow the winter sun into the depth of the open plan kitchen, living and dining when needed.

The first floor is defined by continuous white built-in storage stretching the length of the house along the party wall. The masterbed consists of a large birch ply bench below a gallery of louvre windows.

Northern light streaks through the timber screen of the highlight windows and tracks across the walls like a sundial on a table.

V-groove ceilings within the master, stairwell / study and attic room help to accentuate the lofted sawtooth roof form from within.

The muted palette throughout is kept simple allowing the white walls and ceilings to create a canvas for the select grade hardwood floors, balustrade, joinery and detailing.
