Spring, Collaroy Plateau

A rear extension and internal renovations to a classic beachside bungalow in Collaroy Plateau, Sydney.

Description

The rear extension is characterised by a gable and lean-to roof form clad in fibre-cement and Accoya battens allowed to weather and grey.

A splayed western red cedar clad wall creates a pocket for the large face-sliding doors and fly-screen sash. Metal powdercoated shrouds frame the openings and create depth to the elevation.

The new roof springs from the eave of the existing house to create a funnel-like ceiling within the kitchen and dining spaces — drawing in light and venting hot air in the summer through a stack effect.

This spring height is a datum throughout the house, with shelving, door heads, joinery, fitting and fixtures aligning — creating order and rhythm.

The material palette consists of warm timber hues captured on a crisp white canvas-like backdrop. Birch plywood has been used to define all of the joinery pieces from the kitchen fronts to the laundry and study bench, where the end grain has been expressed for all visible panel edges to maintain interest in the grain and material origin.

The concrete GFRC benchtops ground the warm timber materials to provide an all-natural palette.
